WENTE TRAIL WORK CAMPING RETREAT MARCH 20 – 22!

Join us for a trail work weekend on Friday, March 20th - 22nd in Willits, CA at the one and only WENTE SCOUT RESERVATION.

The 11th edition of the Wente 8-Hour is right around the corner, and winter did what winter does—trees came down, weeds crept in, trail banks softened, and a bridges need their annual TLC. This is the weekend we put it all back together.

As is tradition, your participation includes lodging, trail work, and riding. So bring your bike, bring your work clothes, and bring your appetite.

These weekends can use a lot of hands, but that doesn’t mean there’s unlimited space. As they have grown in popularity, it is very possible that it will FILL. If you’re a regular, you know what to do.

The Primary Trail Work Objective:

This isn’t your standard weed-whack-and-rake affair. This year’s focus is structural. We’re repairing a small bridge that took a beating over the wet season, scraping back the encroaching weeds that are slowly trying to reclaim singletrack, fortifying trail banks where the dirt has gone soft, and clearing downed trees that are currently blocking the flow.

This is what it takes to enjoy one of the best damn weekends of the year, and it’s what it takes to make camp habitable for a thousand kids that will ride these trails after Race Wente. Every hour you put in echoes well beyond race weekend.

Bring the Right Trail Work Gear!

Here’s your list of things you must remember to bring in order to make it through...

  • Backpack (hydration pack recommended) to carry your lunch, water, and other necessities.
  • Work gloves. A second pair isn’t a bad idea either. We also have work gloves if you don’t have your own favorite pair.
  • Protective eyewear. We can provide this if you don’t have your own.
  • Sunscreen for the sunny days.
  • Work boots with a solid steel or plastic toe box. Sneakers don’t cut it for trail work because we’re moving heavy things like rocks and logs, and you could get your toes smashed up pretty bad if you don’t have adequate protection.
  • Long pants & long sleeves. We work with brush, saws, and things that can scratch you up or cut you if you’re not wearing protective clothing. Layer up.
  • Rain poncho because March in Willits can be unpredictable.
  • Technu — while we have this on-site, there is a lot of poison oak at Wente, and this stuff is the real deal. You might want your own in case you’re concerned about a communal bottle in the shower and are exceptionally sensitive.

Lock your calendars. Tell your friends. The 11th edition of the Wente 8-Hour doesn’t build itself—but with your help, it’ll be ready.

See you in the forest.

With love,

The cast and crew at Bike Monkey
